They are not a real army,
but a cluster of bands bounded by commons goals: pillaging, destruction,
provocation of Imperium slaves... Fanatics, mercenaries and outlaws
can be seen in this group.

Squats:
They are a human subrace, like ogryns or ratlings. They are the
far sons of miners and engineers who left for ore-rich systems,
near the galaxy centre. At the time humanity started to travel through
the Empyrean, they settled on these worlds to exploits mines the
size of a continent.
Self-caring colonies were created, in underground cities carved
in the rock to protect against lethal conditions of the surface.
Added to the life-preserving facilities were built forges and industrial
complexes to transform the ore just extracted.
These world were cut of terra by violent Warp storms for thousand
years. Colonists had to adapt to high gravity and extreme climat
characterizing these desert-worlds, and to create a social organization
apart for the Imperium.
When these world were discovered again, during the Era Of Crusade,
they had formed a new race, apart from humanity. They have also
developped their own culture, based on respect of the clan and of
the ancestors, mine work, stonecunning, metal crafting, honour,
trade and ancestral grudges (dwarfs in Warhammer). Their technology
had also evolved in a slightly different way. Their culture and
technology were both influenced by the original colons' culture
(miners and engineers) and by the harsh life conditions of these
planets.
Even if they are apart from the Imperium, Squats have open many
prosperous trade ways (which does not excludes a few wars, against
the Imperium or between clans). Their favorite enemies are the orks.
Due to their merely genetic loyalty to their ancestors and to their
natural resistance to Warp energies, only a few squats fell to Chaos
false promises (photos to the left).
Squats have disappeared during the 2nd edition of WH40K.
